8 Networking Groups in Beijing
We all understand the importance of networking. So, I thought I would list a few networking groups in Beijing. I am sure there are many groups and clubs that meet regularly and I am also sure that I do not know all of them. So, if you would like to add a group or club, feel free to leave a comment and let me know about the networking group in Beijing you like or even the networking groups in China you like. With that said let’s get started.
InterNations is a world wide networking platform and I start with them because they are well known in Beijing. Not because I am fond of them. I actually do not like their website. I feel it is very restrictive, which is why I never use their website. But with that said, they do have a lot of activities. They hold regular networking events and most are relaxed and fun. They also have a lot of meet ups for special interests and general game nights that include poker and bowling. If you are new to Beijing and want to make friends this is a great way to start.
The FC Club
The FC Club is also well known in Beijing. They are mainly focused on professional development and career development. They hold meetings about once or twice a month and they usually have a decent turn out. Below is an example of one event:
Sep. 26 Thurs. FC Club (Beijing) Career Development – Headhunters, HRs and Professionals Networking EveningThese nights are for:(1) People that are looking for more opportunities for career development and/or for new and more interesting challenges.(2) Companies that are looking for employees – suggest to your HR people that they attend.(3) “Executive Search” and “Headhunter” companies – this is a golden, not to be missed opportunity.(4) People wishing to meet and have a good time with some of Beijing’s best.
If you have anything to do with China, then you have heard the term “Guanxi.” So, it only makes sense that there is a group named Guanxi. The Beijing Guanxi Network is a group on LinkedIn and they have meet ups every now and then. I have been to one of their networking events and I had a very good time. There was a diverse group and everyone was friendly. I was able to make a few contacts and overall I had a positive time. The Beijing Guanxi Network is a sub-group of the Guanxi Network group on LinkedIn and the Guanxi Network group holds networking events throughout China and Asia. So, be sure to sign up and take part of their great events.
Chamber of Commerce
There are many chambers of commerce in China. Almost every major country as one in Beijing. These chambers of commerce usually have regular networking events. This is a great way to meet new people from your home country. You can find your countries by doing a quick search on Google: “(Your country) Chamber of Commerce Beijing.” Below is a small list of the more notable ones:
I don’t know much about this network because I am not a woman, but they do seem to be active and they hold regular events. There last event was today, September 25th 2013, according to their home page. They write that the group is for women who wish to:
- Share knowledge and enhance their professional skills
- Make meaningful business connections and friendships
- Meet like-minded people, be inspired and have fun!
Are you interested in NGO’s or saving the environment? If you said yes, then check out this networking group in Beijing. According to their website: “Greening the Beige (GtB) is an eco-minded arts collective and not-for-profit community network dedicated to nurturing awareness of environmental issues. 点废成绿 GtB promotes and celebrates earth friendly artists and organizations in Beijing.” If this sounds like your crowd then be sure to check out their up-coming events and see where it takes you!
Beijing American Club (美洲 俱乐部)
If you have some money to burn and you want to rub elbows with the wealthier Beijingers, then this is the club for you. The admission fee is 200,000 RMB ($32,675) and the annual fee of 12,000 RMB (about $2,000). I don’t have that kind of money for the admission fee, so I have no idea what they have to offer. If you are interested in finding out more check out their website and let me know.
85 Broads is a global women’s networking group in Beijing. They started in New York in 1997 and they now have chapters all over the world. The groups mission “is to provide the unique opportunity for all women to engage with each other related to business in China and connect to a global platform of other inspired women in the world today.” If you are a woman and you are looking to become more involved in Beijing, this is a great place to start. If you are a man, send them an email they might be able to help you find other groups or they might be interested in what you have to say. Never hurts to say “Hello” and be friendly.
Final Thoughts on Networking Groups in Beijing
At the beginning of the post I said there are many different networking groups in Beijing and I hope this list helps you find one that helps grow your career and network in Beijing. I only added groups that I have heard of through friends or by internet searches. My criterion for the list was that the group is active and regularly holds events. Did your group not make the list? Chances are I don’t know about it. So, please leave a comment and I will be sure to check it out and maybe add it to the list.
